The State of Plastic Pollution
Australia uses 3.5 million tonnes of plastic every year, of which only 13% are recycled. The rest end up in our landfills, with 130,000 tonnes leaking into our oceans annually.
The effect?
- By 2025, it is estimated that 99% of marine birds will have ingested plastic, leading to slow and painful deaths.
- By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic in the ocean, by weight, than there are fish.
It's a sad state of affairs that reveals just the visible side of the problem. Beneath the surface, the damage runs much deeper.
Plastic decomposition and microplastics
Your typical plastic bottle takes around 450 years to decompose, leeching harmful chemicals into the environment throughout the process. On top of this, plastic never reverts back to natural elements, it only breaks down into smaller plastic fragments known as microplastics.
These microplastics are now found everywhere from oceans and rivers to soils and even in the air we breathe. They are absorbed by plants and ingested by wildlife and eventually make its way back to us through the food chain, leading to serious health concerns such as:
- Cell damage;
- Hormone disruption;
- Chronic inflammation; and
- Damage to reproductive health.
Combine this with the toxins that can leech from plastic packaging into our food, water and personal care products, and we are in essence poisoning both ourselves and our environment.
So, what can we do?
Making choices for today and tomorrow
Each choice we make is a ripple that expands across our environment and shapes our future. It may seem insignificant, but small, mindful decisions accumulate and become powerful agents for change, affecting not only ourselves but everything around us. So how do we want to shape our future?
At Blue Earth Organics, our starting point is the shower - a daily ritual for many. By making a simple switch from plastic bottles to solid bars, the impact can be profound. Consider this:
The average person uses 34 plastic bottles of shower care products, including shampoo, conditioner, face and body wash, every year. If only one in five Australians switched to solid shower care, we would see a reduction of 180 million plastic bottles from entering our landfills and oceans each and every year.
This is not only achievable, but essential. To make this happen, we put our heart and souls into creating the best shower bars Australia has to offer.
